I'm a brand new FBackup user and I'm trying to set up my first backup job. I'm mainly concerned with backing up files from my external hard drive, which contains a lot of important documents and media.
I've been looking through the documentation and forum, but I'm still a bit unsure about the best way to handle external drives. Specifically, I'm wondering:
Should I create a separate backup job for the external drive, or include it in my main backup?
Are there any specific settings I should be aware of when backing up external drives (e.g., handling drive letter changes, ensuring the drive is connected)?
What's the best way to verify the integrity of backups from an external drive?
Are there any recommendations for how often I should back up an external drive, especially if the files change frequently?
I'm using FBackup to back up to another external drive. Any tips or best practices you can share would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance for your help.

When backing up from an external drive, it should be better to use a separate backup job, as there could be cases when the drive is not connected to your computer.
Also we recommend to check if the drive letter of the external drive is correct, before running the backup.
After each backup execution, FBackup will perform a test for that backup, to make sure the backup is fine.
The frequency of the backup should be every day, if you have files changing often.
I’ve been using FBackup for a while, including with external drives, so I’ll share what’s worked for me.
1. Separate job vs main backup
I personally recommend creating a separate backup job for the external drive. It keeps things cleaner and avoids errors when the drive isn’t connected. If the external drive is missing, only that job fails instead of affecting your main system backup.
2. Settings for external drives
A few things to watch out for:
Try to keep the same drive letter assigned in Windows (Disk Management helps with that).
Enable options that skip the job if the source is missing, so you don’t get constant error notifications.
If your external drive isn’t always connected, avoid scheduling the job too frequently unless you’re sure it will be plugged in at that time.
3. Verifying backup integrity
FBackup has a verify backup option — definitely enable it, especially for important documents and media. I also occasionally do a test restore of a few random files to make sure everything is actually usable.
