This was done numerous times and did not work. Perhaps you missed the fact that the folder resided on the EXTERNAL drive. however ther is a little utility called "Unlocker Assistant" that did work

An old and deleted file folder on the external drive that once held the backup job is still showing. The folder is empty and when i try to delete it the response is that this folder /file cannot be found. any suggestions on how to get rid of it?
