Restore Failure?

Post by fullerdf »

I am trying to restore some of the files from yesterday's automatic backup. The Version 5.0.218 restore job has been running for hours but has not completed even though the original mirror backup took only a few minutes. The progress bar is still at zero after about 7 hours.

Sorry but if this is "normal" it is not expected or desirable. Rather it seems to me that a bug in the restore process may be revealing itself. Please help!

P.S. Other info may be relevant. 1) The "bRestore.exe" task is consuming about 50% of the CPU (and has been from the beginning of the job over 7 hours ago). 2) I have tried to do this restore job several times (cancelled after a couple of hours the first time ... sooner other times). 3) Tried several different ways of restoring all files, some files, etc. 4) I had trouble even looking at the backup files in the mirror copy (on my network computer) while the restore job was running due to some sort of "permissions" issue with Win 7 File Manager (the files are in a "public" folder that I should be able to see without restrictions. 5) Later I did a manual copy of the main files (about 1.5GB) of interest in less than 15 minutes (FBackup not running). 6) These were working files for an Audacity recording of a 5 hour radio show. After the manual copy, Audacity would not open the files normally so something else was needed to fully restore the recording besides the main body of files Audacity creates in the recording's data folders.

Hi,

Please make sure the antivirus is not blocking the bRestore.exe process.
If you still have the problem, please use DebugView (freeware application) to monitor the restore process. Send us the debug log to info[at]fbackup[dot]com

Hi Thanks for the reply. I use MS Security Essentials. It did not report any application issues with bRestore.exe. I added bRestore.exe to the exceptions list but I think that only effects what files are scanned during a scheduled virus scan ... not what is scanned during the real time checks for viral activity.

I think that it is more likely that something has happened to Windows permissions than an MSSE issue. I have begun to get warnings on all my backup jobs. The source of the changes in permissions is a mystery and may not be due to FBackup. Log files show several warnings that read

[10/28/2013 2:00:42 PM] Warning: Skipping file C:\Users\Others\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\libraries\Documents.library-ms
Source error (code 5). Access is denied. (C:\Users\Others\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\libraries\Documents.library-ms).

Backup completed at 10/28/2013 2:00:43 PM with 0 error(s), 4 warning(s)

In an attempt to correct issues with FBackup and the Windows File Manager, I have tried to reset permissions on Public folders to Everyone-full but did not change library permissions. Similar errors are now occurring on other backup jobs as well.

For example on my manual backup of Thunderbird the warnings read

[10/28/2013 12:13:44 PM] Warning: File "\\NOTINGHAM\Public\Documents\Crossbow Daily Bkup\Thunderbird Test\Thunderbird\Profiles\jft6uui2.default\Mail\pop-server.tx.rr.com\Inbox.mozmsgs\1376513891000.-24654758301085961955525712206291665647.252675232.subscriber_preferences_change.eere%40service.govdelivery.com.wdseml" not found in backup, skipped.

For now, I have found a way around the failing restore by manually copying the files from the mirror to my laptop and working with them without using FBackup to restore. I hope that the restore process will become more stable later but for now I found a way to avoid the issue.

The tool you wanted me to use is for Vista and prior ... not made for Win7-64. I did not install DebugView for now. Let me know if this is an issue that we should continue to explore for the sake of FBackup reliability.

Hi,

Do you have the same problem if you try to restore the files to another location, different than the default one?

For the Thunderbird job, can you find this file in destination?
\\NOTINGHAM\Public\Documents\Crossbow Daily Bkup\Thunderbird Test\Thunderbird\Profiles\jft6uui2.default\Mail\pop-server.tx.rr.com\Inbox.mozmsgs\1376514081000.150762683664878199368515952355378449036.252675289.user_confirmation.eere%40service.govdelivery.com.wdseml

Second question first -- I found the file named --
1376514081000.150762683664878199368515952355378449036.252675289.
user_confirmation.eere%40service.govdelivery.com.wdseml.

It was in the indicated mirror folder. (Note that the file name is truncated here by the forum tools so I inserted a line return.)

Re the first question -- I can no longer attempt restoring to an alternate location. The files have been deleted after completion of the work I needed to do with Audacity.
