I just installed Fbackup4, version 4.1 build 134. Just as a test I thought that I would back up a small folder to another hard drive in my computer. So I picked out a folder that contains only about about 1 megabyte of data, and I set up Fbackup to back up this folder. Setting up the backup task was easy.
Then I ran the backup program. Everything started all right, but then on the bottom of the Fbackup window it says "Preparing Shadow Copy...Please Wait. I waited, and waited and waited, for over an hour and nothing happened. The program seems to be stuck at this point. Nothing else is happening. What has gone wrong, and how do I fix it?
Thanks!

PS: On my Windows XP SP3 computer, the Volume Shadow Copy, and the MS Software Shadow Copy Provider Services are both running (set on automatic). I uninstalled and reinstalled the Fbackup4 program, and I got the same results.

Hi,
Backing up open files has the following limitations: It works

- only on Windows XP, Windows 2003 Server or Windows Vista

- only for users with administrator access rights to copy open files

- only on local hard drives

- only on NTFS formatted partitions

- only if the VSS (Volume Shadow Service) is running and it is properly configured
Please make sure the VSS is started not only set on Automatic.

I have FBackup installed and have backed up a number of things yesterday when I tried to start a backup I had the same problem.I get the following message

Preparing Shadow Copy...Please Wait. I waited, and left it running for at least two hours and nothing happened. The program seems to be stuck at this point. Nothing else is happening. I have checked the VSS service and MS Software Shadow Copy Provider both are started. The folder I am trying to backup is on a 500 GB USB drive, and I am using a D-Link NAS (DNS-323) to backup to. I have tried shutting my system down and restarting but I cannot get it to get beyond the above error. I have backed up folders from this drive previously but now nothing seems to be working. My system is the following..
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

OS Service Pack Service Pack 3

Internet Explorer 7.0.5730.13 (IE 7.0)

DirectX 4.09.00.0904 (DirectX 9.0c)

I found that the Logical Disk Manager service was not started. After I started it and restarted my computer FBackup started working properly again. Hopefully this will take care of the problem

No luck it ran for a little while and the problem has resurfaced again.

I start the backup and it starts ... Displays the message "Preparing Shadow Copy...Please Wait" and never gets any further.

The services for VSS are started and running. Is there anything else????
thanks Tony

Hi,
Please do not post the same problem under different topics. We answered you on to the other post. We suggest you to check again the services because you were able to backup open files with the same FBackup settings.
