Shadow Copy

Post by fullerdf »

My log files contain these statements.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++
[6/5/2014 9:59:53 PM] Preparing shadow copy
[6/5/2014 9:59:53 PM] Could not create Volume Shadow Copy. Locked files will not be copied. The user needs administrative rights to use Volume Shadow Copy
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I do not remember seeing this language before.

What does this mean and what causes it?

If this is a significant issue, what should I do to correct it?

Hi,

Please send me the complete backup log to info[at]fbackup[dot]com.
I need to see more details as there could be source drives from network and Volume shadow copy does not work for such locations.

Backing up open files has the following limitations: It works
- only on Windows XP or newer
- only for users with administrator access rights to copy open files
- only on local hard drives
- only on NTFS formatted partitions
- only if the VSS (Volume Shadow Service) is running and it is properly configured

I am on Win7 Pro 64 bit SP1 with all updates -- check.
I am the administrator but the backup is being done automatically whether logged in as admin or not. -- Not sure what is required here.
I am backing up to a drive on my network -- that is at least one of the main reasons for backing up, i.e., to lower the risk of local hard drive crashes.
All the drives are NTFS -- check.
VSS ?? Volume Shadow Copy Service ?? VSCS is included in Win7 and I have not disabled it as far as I know -- ?? check I think.

Hi,

For a scheduled backup: please open Backup Properties->Scheduler->Edit.
Set a username and password for an administrator account in order to run every time that job as administrator.
