I have a brand new PC with 8 gb of memory. The pagefile.sys is 8 gb. It serves no purpose to back it up. Can it be skipped somehow?

Yes, you can uncheck that file from Backup Properties->Sources list or you can set an exclude filter on Backup Properties->Filters page.
