Been playing around w/ FBackup, creating a mirror of some "test" folders...I see that it makes sure that the latest version of a file is in the backup. But is that because it simply rewrites everything, or does it compare the version in the backup w/ the original? If not, that would mean that even unchanged files get recreated each time backup is run, right? Which means slow backups. Thx.

Hi,
The Mirror backup type will copy in destination only new and modified files since the last backup execution.

Please note FBackup does not look in destination folder to compare the existing files with the source files and determine which one to be backed up, but it compares the source files with the information from fkc catalog file.

OK. Thanks for the clarification and explanation on how the fkc file is used.
So...once the initial Mirror backup is created, subsequent backups should go fairly quickly since it's copying only new and modified files. Is that right?
Thanks.

Hi,
Yes, that is true.

It appears to me that Mirror backup is fast and puts an editable copy of my files into my external drive. It seems to have the disadvantage, however, that if a file is backed up and then subsequently altered in my computer without changing the filename, subsequent backups do not update the file in the external drive. Full backup, by contrast, will update an already backed-up file in my external drive. The backed up files are, however, read-only and the backup process takes typically thirty minutes even if it had already been done before. Is this what you would expect, and does it mean that, unlike a mirror backup, in the event of failure of my computer the full backup on my external drive could be downloaded only into a computer with FBackup4 already installed if an editable copy is required? Comments/advice would be welcomed.

Hi,
Please note the Mirror backup type will update any modified file in destination even if the file name is the same.
