I'll cut right to the chase with this question. Is there any reason that I can't just continue using the old program. I imagine that the main issue would be that you are not supporting the old program any longer, is that correct?

You can continue using the old version of FBackup but we will no longer develop it. I cannot tell you now for how long the support will be available for the old version.
