VSS not working properly

I am trying to backup my Skype settings, and am getting the following errors that it cannot be accessed because it is in use by another process.
I received an error that it timed out waiting for a vss pipe.

[3/5/2014 7:30:17 PM] Preparing shadow copy
[3/5/2014 7:30:37 PM] Could not create Volume Shadow Copy. Locked files will not be copied. Timeout while waiting for the vss pipe

I have checked that the VSS service is started, can you offer any explanations why this is happening?

I have also restarted the VSS service and tried running the backup with the same results.
This time told that it did create the shadow copy, but still failed to copy files in use.

[3/5/2014 8:38:01 PM] Preparing shadow copy
[3/5/2014 8:38:02 PM] Shadow copy created.

[3/5/2014 8:38:42 PM] Warning: Skipping file C:\Users\Tony\AppData\Roaming\skype\shared_dynco\dc.lock
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process (TLFNFileStream.CreateFile) (srFileOpenError)

[3/5/2014 8:38:42 PM] Added file C:\Users\Tony\AppData\Roaming\skype\shared_httpfe\queue.db
[3/5/2014 8:38:42 PM] Warning: Skipping file C:\Users\Tony\AppData\Roaming\skype\shared_httpfe\queue.lock
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process (TLFNFileStream.CreateFile) (srFileOpenError)

I have a copy of the full log if that will help.

I am running the latest version of the program V 5.0 Build 389
Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1

thanks Tony

Hi,

Backing up open files has the following limitations: It works
- only on Windows XP or newer
- only for users with administrator access rights to copy open files
- only on local hard drives
- only on NTFS formatted partitions
- only if the VSS (Volume Shadow Service) is running and it is properly configured

Also please see if you can manually copy those files using Windows Explorer.

As stated, Windows 7, the id is administrator account, it is on the C drive,
as you can see from the information I pasted from the backup log,
and NTFS and the VSS service is runnning.
I am not sure what you mean by properly configured?
Manually trying to copy the file has the same result

If you will look at my post again you will see that I
said the following.

I have also restarted the VSS service and tried running the backup with the same results.
This time told that it did create the shadow copy, but still failed to copy files in use.

[3/5/2014 8:38:01 PM] Preparing shadow copy
[3/5/2014 8:38:02 PM] Shadow copy created.

[3/5/2014 8:38:42 PM] Warning: Skipping file C:\Users\Tony\AppData\Roaming\skype\shared_dynco\dc.lock
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process (TLFNFileStream.CreateFile) (srFileOpenError)
[3/5/2014 8:38:42 PM] Added folder C:\Users\Tony\AppData\Roaming\skype\shared_httpfe\
[3/5/2014 8:38:42 PM] Added file C:\Users\Tony\AppData\Roaming\skype\shared_httpfe\queue.db
[3/5/2014 8:38:42 PM] Warning: Skipping file C:\Users\Tony\AppData\Roaming\skype\shared_httpfe\queue.lock
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process (TLFNFileStream.CreateFile) (srFileOpenError

I will try running the backup again later today and will post the results

Tony

Hi,

As I was able to see on the internet, those skype files are also locked for antivirus programs. So there seems to be a protection of those files.
You should close Skype when backing up those files.
