Selection of destination

Good afternoon
In New Backup Wizard/Destination I need to click on Advanced in order to bring up more selections.
I select External Disk (which is an external hard drive) from the list and nothing happens. It is not listed as D (which it is). If I click on Save it pops up a box saying Select Destination Drive which I have just done.
So what do I do now?
