I select a backup job and go to properties. I enter a user name and password, using Windows scheduler. After saying OK, no entry appears in the schedule list. This process works fine on a different computer. The user name and password are different from the logged in user, who has no password.

If you don't have a Windows login password, you should use the Built-in scheduler.
