I have Fbackup 4 (4.8, free version) and have been using it for ages but want to go to the latest version. Can I jump straight to Fbup8 and retain all my settings and backups, etc.

Yes, you can. Please install version 8 of FBackup and import the backup jobs and options from version 4.
